Upgrading from 0.x

What changes in WxAlerts for Home Assistant 1.0, what is removed on upgrade, and how to repoint your automations.

1.0 is a breaking release. The integration now follows the places on your WxAlerts account and signs in with your own login.

What changed

  • Places replace Home Assistant zones. Save the places you care about on wxalerts.org and they arrive as devices on their own. Zones are no longer read.
  • Storm cell alerts replace lightning. The lightning sensors, lightning devices, person tracking and lightning options are gone.
  • Signing in replaces the shared public login. Home Assistant is a Supporter feature, and each Home Assistant gets its own login when you sign in to WxAlerts from it.

What happens when you upgrade

  1. Update WxAlerts in HACS and restart Home Assistant.
  2. Every 0.x entity and device (county, zone and lightning) is removed, so nothing is left behind as unavailable. Your alert type selection is kept.
  3. Home Assistant shows a re-authenticate prompt for WxAlerts. Open it and sign in with your Supporter account.
  4. Your places appear as devices within a few seconds.

Repointing automations

Automations and dashboards that used 0.x entities need new ids. Everything is now per place: binary_sensor.wxalerts_<place>_... and sensor.wxalerts_<place>_.... See Entities and events for the list.

0.x 1.0
Per county alert entities The same alert entities, per place
binary_sensor.wxalerts_<zone>_tornado_alert binary_sensor.wxalerts_<place>_tornado_warning, one per alert type picked
sensor.wxalerts_<zone>_lightning_flashes Removed. Use binary_sensor.wxalerts_<place>_storm_cell_approaching.
location and zone in wxalerts_alert and wxalerts_hazard data place_id and place_name

The wxalerts_storm_cell event and the storm cell device triggers are new in 1.0. See Automations for examples.

May we use Microsoft Clarity to see how pages are used (clicks, scrolling and replays of a visit, with anything you type hidden), plus a random ID linking that to crash reports? Only to find bugs and confusing screens. Never advertising, never sold.
