Meteorologist accounts are for working meteorologists: NWS forecasters, broadcast meteorologists and others whose job is forecasting.
How you get it
Choose Meteorologist under Change account type on the Account tab.
Granted straight away when you confirm a work email that is either:
- an address at noaa.gov, or
- an address on our research list of working meteorologists.
We email a link to that address. Opening it, signed in to the same WxAlerts account, makes you a meteorologist. Links last 48 hours, and you can ask for five a day.
Reviewed by an admin in every other case, including station, university and emergency management addresses. Fill in the request form: employer, job title, work email, work phone, a staff directory page that lists you, and where you work. Your work email still has to be confirmed by link before you can submit. An admin approves, declines, or asks for more, and any note they leave shows on the same form.
The address behind a grant is checked again after a year. If an admin removes the type, the automatic path does not give it back; a new request goes to an admin.
What meteorologists can do
On any report page, and on the vetting board:
- Mark a report Good, Invalid (it was not a valid report when filed) or Wording issue. One Invalid or Wording issue mark takes a public report off the public map at once, and an admin then confirms or reverses it. You can change or withdraw your mark.
- Add a public remark. It shows on the report page and the spotter’s profile, signed with your label.
- Ask the spotter a question. You can have one open question per report, and the spotter can reply once to each. Conversations close after seven days without a message.
- Create a personal placefile key for GRLevelX, which also shows restricted reports. See placefile keys.
Meteorologists do not file reports unless they are also a current spotter.
